Frequently asked questions
Why is EV salary sacrifice different in Scotland?
Scotland sets its own non-savings, non-dividend income-tax rates. The current six-band schedule (19% Starter, 20% Basic, 21% Intermediate, 42% Higher, 45% Advanced, 48% Top) is materially different from England, Wales and Northern Ireland's three-band 20/40/45% schedule. Both the tax you save on the sacrificed amount and the tax you pay on the Benefit-in-Kind use the Scottish rate. National Insurance is a reserved UK-wide matter, so it's identical wherever you live.
Do I save more or less in Scotland?
Higher-rate Scottish taxpayers (income £43,663–£75,000) sit at 42% rather than the rUK 40%, so they save 2p more on every pound sacrificed — but also pay 2p more on the BiK. The sacrifice is larger than the BiK on an EV (BiK is just 4% of P11D in 2026/27), so the net effect is almost always a bigger saving in Scotland than rUK at the same salary. Below the Higher band the difference is small.
Which Scottish tax band am I in?
Personal Allowance up to £12,570 (no tax). 19% Starter to £15,397. 20% Basic to £27,491. 21% Intermediate to £43,662. 42% Higher to £75,000. 45% Advanced to £125,140. 48% Top above that. Note: between £100,000 and £125,140 the Personal Allowance tapers, giving an effective 62% marginal rate in Scotland (42% + 20% from lost PA).
Does NI work differently in Scotland?
No. National Insurance is a UK-wide reserved matter — Scottish employees pay the same 8% main rate / 2% upper rate as everywhere else. Only income tax differs.
Where do these figures come from?
Scottish income tax bands and rates come from gov.scot (Scottish Budget). BiK percentages come from HMRC's company-car appropriate-percentage schedule. National Insurance thresholds and rates come from HMRC. We auto-refresh these from source each tax-year start and after the Scottish Budget — see /data/scotland-tax for the live figures and last-refresh date.
